USE - Method for preparing (R)-1-(2-chlorophenyl)ethane-1,2-diol (II) that is used for preparing Cenobamate (claimed) i.e. antiepileptic drug, which can be used in the treatment of disorders of CNS, anxiety, depression, convulsion, epilepsy, migraine, bipolar disorder, drug abuse, smoking, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obesity, sleep disorder, neuropathic pain, stroke, cognitive impairment, neuro degeneration, stroke and muscle spasm. No biological data given. ADVANTAGE - The compound (II) is directly from acid intermediate without forming intermediate ester compound; and has purity greater than 99% by HPLC; and can be prepared in cost-effective, shorter process manner. The Cenobamate (I) has high yields and purity. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Preparing (R)-1-(2-chlorophenyl)ethane-1,2-diol of formula (II) comprises: reducing (2R)-(2-chlorophenyl)(hydroxy)acetic acid of formula (III) with a suitable reducing agent to provide a compound (II). INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: 1. a process for purification of (R)-1-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(2H-tetrazol-2-yl)ethanol, comprising: (a) dissolving crude (R)-1-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(2H-tetrazol-2-yl)ethanol in a suitable chloro solvent such as dichloromethane; (b) adding a suitable hydrocarbon solvent such as hexanes or heptane to step (a) solution; and (c) isolating the pure (R)-1-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(2H-tetrazol-2-yl)ethanol; and 2. a process for the preparation of Cenobamate (I) comprising: (a1) preparing a compound (II); and (b1) converting the compound (II) into Cenobamate (I).
