成果简介NOVELTY - Ambient operable non-aqueous rechargeable iron-ion battery (100) comprises: anode including mild steel anode (101); an active cathode system (104) comprising iron(II,III) oxide microspheres coated on stainless steel (SS) current collector (105); and a separator membrane (103) soaked, non-aqueous ferrous ions containing electrolyte between its anode and cathode. USE - The battery is useful as an alternative energy storage device to the lithium-ion batteries which is used in portable electronics, electric vehicles and various renewable energy storage systems. ADVANTAGE - The battery: has selectively a specific capacity of 156-58 mAh/g at current densities of 25-750 mA/g, respectively, discharge voltage plateau at 0.9 V at various current densities, high cyclic stability with 80% capacity retention at 100 mA/g in 125 cycles and capacity retention of 92% at the current density of 500 mA/g in 500 cycles, and average coulombic efficiency of 75% at 100 mA/g in 125 cycles and 85% at the current density of 500 mA/g in 500 cycles; has fast charging-discharging characteristics of the active cathode system equal to 4C rate at the current density of 500 mA/g; has highly stable properties of the iron(II,III) oxide microspheres after 500 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles at 500 mA/g, spectroscopic analysis including X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy before and after cycling suggest no changes in the iron(II,III) oxide morphology and phases after the cycling; is suitable alternative energy storage device to the lithium-ion batteries due to its high electrochemical performance, including the abundancy, ecofriendly, and cost-efficient benefits for the iron; utilizes highly stable iron oxide microspheres based cathode which leads to high-capacity retention at low- and high-current densities, at a very high current density of 500 mA/g, it shows more than 92% capacity retention with an average 85% Coulombic efficiency even after 500 cycles, thus providing the efficient and highly stable rechargeable nonaqueous iron-ion batteries; is a rechargeable, non-aqueous iron-ion battery, where the very stable iron(II,III) oxide microspheres would be synthesized by an ambient processable solvothermal process/method which can be scaled up easily; has iron(II,III) oxide microspheres cathode that would be highly reversible, and the anodic peak and cathodic peak would be within acceptable limit at a different scan rate of 5-35 mV/second with an interval of 5 mV/second, respectively; and utilizes low-cost iron which is preferred over the other monovalent and multivalent metals, because of various reasons, including its widespread availability across a relatively uniform geographical distribution, no or minimal toxicity and combustibility, and also environmentally benign. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: active cathode system suitable for ambient operable non-aqueous rechargeable iron-ion battery comprising iron(II,III) oxide microspheres coated on SS current collector; and manufacturing the active cathode system comprising (i) providing a slurry of iron(II,III) oxide microspheres by mixing with binding agent polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), (ii) adding N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone to the mixture of step (i) under stirring, and (iii) coating the prepared slurry preferably by drop casting on the SS current collector followed by drying at 70-90℃, preferably 80℃.
